Jimmy Carter: The 98-year-old is the oldest living former White House chief. The Carter Center broke the news.
Former US President Jimmy Carter started home palliative care. He reported the Carter Center, a charity center created by the former President, now 98 years old. After a series of brief hospital stays, Carter has “decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of further medical interventions,” the agency said in a tweet.
He said he has the full support of his medical team and his family, who “asks for privacy at this time and are grateful for the concern shown by his many admirers.” The 39th American President, he remained in office for only one term.
Carter marked his most recent birthday in October with family and friends in the small town of Plains, Georgia, where he and his wife, Rosalyn, were born between World War I and the Great Depression. Carter, a Democrat, became the 39th President of the United States when he conquered former President Gerald R. Ford in 1976. He did one term and was conquered by Republican Ronald Reagan in 1980.
In a previous post, Carter will not be there at Joe Biden’s inauguration, but Bush will be present instead. Former President Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter have announced that they will not be present due to Covid: the two are 96 and 93 years old, respectively. It is the first time they have not attended the ceremony since Carter was sworn in as the 39th president in 1977.
Instead, former President George W. Bush and former First Lady Laura will be present in person. Their spokesperson said they “can’t wait to return to the Capitol for the swearing-in of President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.”
